Databases have been the number one reason for the existence of
computer systems for many decades. The ability to store raw data and
manipulate it to produce usable information for end users has been an
invaluable asset over the last several decades.
With the release of the IBM Personal
Computer in 1980 there has been a
creation of a whole new facet to the
database industry. Now for the first
time individuals were free to design
their own tables, queries and reports
without the need for support from a
large MIS department. Never has
so much been made available for so
little. The cost of an IBM PC in contrast to an IBM ES9000 is staggering.
Plus the savings on operators and developers and other associated staff
makes the PC based database systems all the more attractive.
As PC's proliferated more and more users were introduced to the
benefits of a electronic database. No longer was it necessary to
store database data in a card-file. So as more person's adopted
the use of PC based databases the early Database Management
Systems (DBMS) showed some of their short-comings. Some
early DBMS did not support Relational DBMS, also many users were
unaware of the need to design database systems in a relational manner.
Typically, whether a limitation of the DBMS used or of the individual
creating the system, a flat file format would be used in the creation
of the database. Flat files are ones that every field in the database is
stored in a single table. For very simple databases this method has it's
advantages, especially when view from the "Keep It Simple Smarty"
point of view. But as your needs grow and the addition of new fields and
new ways of viewing queries and reports is required, the flat file format
will become a significant barrier to achieving the right results.
